Birthday Clubs

Ok, I am not saying where or how, but some people who know each other only remotely through the intrawebs have come up with an idea of a Birthday Club. What is a Birthday Club, you ask? Well, according to one young parent, their child’s toddler birthday had no guests because they did not know any children that age. So appropriate aged birthday guests were being solicited over the intrawebs. The parents who participated in the Club would invite other member’s kids to their offspring’s birthdays. So that the birthdays would look like birthdays and less like a farce. I laughed but people signed up. What have we come to?

on one hand, it seems like a perfectly fine attempt to help the child make new friends.
on the other - it just scares me.

What have we come to indeed!! It's one thing if you know the folks you are soliciting...and live close by...

kodi's mom: because it seems wierd to just attend a party of a kid you don't know. You should atleast be acquaintances with the parents/kid, right? I can understand starting a playgroup, but this group was just to buffer the guest list. The child/parents might as well hire actors to act the part.

m4: thought so too.

rayshma: I can understand starting a playgroup. But this is not one. It just to make birthdays a bit more like birthdays. How do you select a gift for a child that you/your child doesn't know? Or in this day and age, thoughtful gifts are bit old fashioned?

gnd: even if you lived close by, just invite random people for your child's birthdays? You know that's like me saying, someone want to come for my birthday party? I don't have friends here. So sad. Try making freiends first, na.
Happy, happy 5th to T2. she has grown soooo tall. A propah princess, now :)

I am hearing about this new concept of "Bhondla clubs" from my Mom in Pune. Group of 25 odd senior aged women come and sings songs etc. It seems they also get international invitations! I thought this idea was progressive - if not anything it helps keep a fun activity alive.

'Birthday Club' not so nice - my reaction was Yikes! What message are you sending to your child? You don't need to make friends to get more kids at your party!

Vinita: Bang on!

rocksea: festive, I suppose? crowded?

shilpa: i like the idea of bhondla clubs!!

What will these b'day club parents tell their kids when they grow up? That they invited random strangers to the party, but caution them against talking to random strangers out in the real world??

Such mixed messages in this day and age. Very sad.

Bhondla club is an awesome idea. May be we should start one here.

But this birthday club reminds me of a movie (I think) The lonely man.(steve martin) In it he is so lonely and doesn't have any friends and still decides to throw a party. The guests are cutouts of cardboard people placed near the window or towards the light source. It was a hilarious movie.

We move every year.. so every birthday we end up not knowing make kids Cheeky's age.. we have a party at school and invite our friends for the party at home! Cheeky is happy.. and the "Birthdays looks like birthdays" whatever that means!

Ananva: do you want to ask them? Or shall I? :)

Dipali: Indeed!

Vinita: I have seen that movie!!!! It was hilarious.

Preethi: Invitng kids from school/darre would be a much better idea, yes.
