Which one do you like the best? #1 or #2/3?
These are the cakes we had for Chip's Birhday Party a few weeks ago.
#1 is bakery made is is allergen free. Cost: $85 This was for his pre-school party.
#2/3 are different views of the same cake. This was made by me for the party we had with family and friends. Cost: less than $15

De-lurking for the first time as I couldn't resist voting. I love the way you write.
My vote is for 2/3. It looks awesome, I would never want to cut it.
Nitu
I like #2/3 for the complexity of the work done and the little fondant characters.
Loved the fondant work on the 2nd cake. Absolutely lovely..would hate to cut and eat it...
2/3....Looks absolutely wonderful
They look delicious. I would love to have'em. I vote for 2/3. They kinda look similar.
ALL: I should have made it clear. #1 is done by a bakery and they charged m3 $85. #2/3 is done by me. Cost less than $15.
Nitu: Hi. And thanks for delurking :)
pooh, shobana, binary, rj: thanks!
ofcourse yours! even if you hadnt said that 2/3 was made by you- I think it looks waaaaaaaaaaay better than 1!
My vote is for #2/3. My decision was made before I read your comment that this is your creation.
Some talent you have there, girl!
The homemade one of course!! Now where's the recipe? How long did it take to make the whole thing? Details please!!:)
# 2/3 - way, way better that #1. I bow to thee, baking goddess! :)
When do you start giving us lessons?
No 1 is unimaginative and dull.
No 2 is a winner.
No 2/3 ofcourse! It is so much more colorful, playful and artistic. I love the face on the side of the cake ...reminds me of one of those fairy tales with talking mountains.....
You should not have said who made which cake...People would have thought 2/3 was special ordered from some fancy bakery (well I guess most people who read you know though that you make killer cakes!). I am so jealous girl. OK I will print these pics to inspire me to actually try these...I have to hunt for the recipes you posted some place - could you please please direct us there?
Dottie you should start a side business...incredible cake! How does it hold up to mailing? ;)
I took another look at the picture - your animals have so much character and personality to them compared to that stuffy looking bear on the other cake...esp the yellow ones at the bottom of your cake - just too cute!
How long from start to finish does it take for you to do this?
Wow! love your cake! just read noons comment...novice baker here hoping to bake a cake for pumpkins birthday...can I get some tips please? :D
Oh Dottie! do you even have to ask? Dont make me spell it out. Im most jealous!! ;)
would love to take classes from you. :) The second picture is better take than the third one in my opinion. And let's not even talk about the first one.
#2 - now can I have a bit of the cake please. The brown parts would be just fine - be a little geenrous while cutting please.
Wow..you are a great baker. Even if you hadn't mentioned that2/3 is made by you I would have still gone for 2/3. The first one has no charm, the colors are boring.. if it wasn't for the teddy it would be more suitable for someone's retirement party. And lets not even talk about the price.. 85 dollars (rolling my eyes)
Where as the one you made ..love the dark chocolate brown, yellows greens and the oranges. love the cute animals, love the shape, love artistry without gong overboard. And the Price?? Priceless
Vinita
Wow! So, Seriously, would you consider giving lessons on weekends?
Supriya.
like that's aq that even needs to be asked!
2/3 ofcourse!
TWO. Definitely number two!
I'm up for 2.......
I'm feeling like having a bucket of yummy cakes!
Happy blogging!
And I got to taste both cakes too(insert evil laughter here)
=D
So you're getting my votes on looks and taste.
Do I even have to say which one was better??
The kids at the party couln't decide which piece they wanted for themselves cos they wanted it ALL.
Your cake looks so delicious, Dottie.
Can you make allergen free cakes at home? Are the ingredients easily available?
I'm sure the birthday boy loved both cakes:)
You are kidding me!! You baked that lovely looking cake all by yourself?? With all those animals and leaves and patterns!!!
You are too good dottie!!
Heylo Ms. showoff :) Ofcourse 2/3 is better ! Seriously I'm impressed and awed.
no contest, dottie - the chocie yummilicious delight!
Ok, now the only way to answer this is to say that had you been in Bankgok, I'd have surely singed up for a baking course with you.
Brilliant!
Oh MY GOSH, like you have to ask dotmom..
2/3 ANYDAY.. awesome stuff... you should write posts or emails about "baking for dummies".. will surely help me...
a very very impressed reader..
daisy: Thanks mucho!
ddmom: thanks and its really easy to make.
ananva: Will do a post on recipes. I had baked the layers and made fondant in chocolate and white before hand. Filling and decorating took about 2 hours.
Mystic: I am no goddess. Just someone who likes making guinea pigs out of people :)
mummyjaan: I'll do a post on how to make the cake. Its super easy.
cluelessness: Hi, nice to meet you :) It is an enchanted tree!!!! I thought this was the ojly place where a teddy and a panda could come together w/o looking silly :) Chip wanted panda and teddy BOTH on his cake.
noon: I'll do a post with my favorite recipes. How much will you pay for the cake noonie? I don't think thre are any margins in the cake business. Although my retirement plan is to start a dairy and a lil tea shop on the premises :) the yellow rabbits are playing hide and seek.. they are chasing each other in the hollow of the tree. Or so it is imagined :)
pumpkin's mom: Even if you don't make a cake, you can buy undecorated cake rounds from a bakery and decorate them yourself. Its a lot of fun.
b o o : hehehehehe :) Come here and I shall bake you a "bun in the oven" cake :)
pg: you would?? I am not a pro. My bottercream decorations are not as good.. :)
Usha: Let me warn you, they are sweet. very, very sweet :)
Vinita:retirement party :) ROTFL. Yeah $85 is too steep for that dontcha think? thanks so much for your words. You get a cake from me now :)
Supriya: I'll do a post.. this cake is very easy.
Mona: hehehe.
GTN: knew I could count on ya!
Friendly Stranger: umm hello stranger :) Come one over and you will get a bucketful of yummy cakes!
GND: YAY! knew you would come through for me! I can make T2's budday cake. A princess? I want to make all these cute girlie cakes :) And ofcourse it will be allergen free!
dipali: I do make allergen free cakes at home. You can avoid nut products and you can buy egg replacer to replace egg for egg allergies and use soy products (milk, yogurt, margarine) or oil for dairy allergies.
~nm: Its an easy cake to bake nm!!
desigirl: thannks deej!
Mira's mom: hahahaha! really? I am doing a post on how to make cakes like these.
Silent One: Let's hope you get a slice when you come here!
Brilliant!! I really thought you baked #1. I mean looking at the one you actually baked it suddenly looks limp but I would be proud of myself if I managed even that at home :)You have such talent. Would love to know how you did all those animals and leaves.
bloody hell!
u BAKED that!
nothing store-bought can beat what u bake, dottie...!
Couldn't resist de-lurking to comment. Nice blog.
Great cake your 2/3, you sure got us readers drooling :)
Curious to know what the verdict/reaction was from your son
-r
ps: Please do more posts on baking 101, you make it seem to simple and doable
and do I get the cake for deciding?? :( I could use some cake!!! Loved both.. but I am partial to 2/3 just because its chocolate!!!
I liked 2/3 as well - Chocolate cake is my favorite!
Your cake takes the cake for being the best cake!
